Gary Burrill, Leader of the NDP of Nova Scotia, speaks in the Legislature on the day of the Save Owls Head rally:

Thank you, Mr. Speaker,

I’m pleased to rise this afternoon to recognize the many people who are presently outside this building, standing together to say that it was a wrong thing for this government to not care enough about transparency, public will, and public conversation, to even let people know when they were designing behind closed doors to sell a piece of Nova Scotia’s remarkable coastline… that had been understood by the people of the Eastern Shore for many years, to have been protected in Owls Head [Provincial Park].

I’m proud to add my voice to this protest against the contempt for public participation in decisions about how our public lands are held, sold, discarded, or developed.

And I would like to thank the group of citizens who have assembled here this afternoon at the Legislature for their vocal vigilance, for their commitment, and their care, towards protecting not just a parcel of our beautiful province, but also in the direction of protecting the principle of transparency, and openness, and accountability, which is so crucial and pivotal to democratic governance. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.”
