Re: your Nov. 24 story, “‘We do not have the support of N.S. government’: Owls Head golf courses scrapped.”

We are delighted by the latest development in the sorry saga of the secret delisting of the former Owls Head Provincial Park Reserve, a non-designated provincial park, and welcome the news that developer Beckwith Gilbert is walking away from his proposed golf course/resort deal.

We urge Premier Tim Houston and his cabinet to return the Owls Head parcel to the Our Parks and Protected Areas list and to proceed with its designation as a full provincial park at the earliest possible opportunity. Or to designate it as a nature reserve or as an addition to the nearby Eastern Shore Islands Wilderness Area.

This highly scenic and ecologically sensitive parcel of coastal land, close to the population centre of the province, urgently requires not only protection but also cautious development of infrastructure for eco-tourism and outdoor recreation.

Keep Owls Head protected and public!
