Three months after that court dismissal and the ensuing rally, and nearly two years after the park was delisted, the sale appears to be dead in the water.
The province could still conceivably find a new buyer for the park land. But for now, Owls Head Provincial Park, and its supporters, can rest easy.

Environmental advocates are calling Lighthouse Links’ decision to back away from its plans a victory.
“This is a landmark victory for the people of Nova Scotia,” said Lindsay Lee, of the Save Owls Head Provincial Park lobby group. “When people recognize that something is deeply wrong, and work together with purpose and vision, they can accomplish amazing things.”

The Facebook group Save Owls Head Provincial Park and others are heralding a private company’s withdrawal from a letter of offer to buy and develop Crown land at Owls Head on the Eastern Shore as a landmark citizen-led victory.
But questions remain about what will become of the 285 hectares of Crown land, divided into four parcels, that has been at the centre of controversy ever since it was removed from the province’s parks and protected plan in 2019 by the Liberal government for the purpose of reaching a conditional agreement to sell it to developer Beckwith Gilbert.

The company did not mention the massive opposition to the project that quickly emerged once the public learned that the Liberals had secretly de-listed Owls Head Provincial Park and offered it for sale at the rock-bottom price of $306 an acre for oceanfront property.

Lighthouse Links has abandoned its goal of building golf courses and a resort area at Owls Head on the Eastern Shore.
“We have concluded that we do not have the support of the government of Nova Scotia necessary to make this project a reality,” the company said in a statement released to the media Tuesday.

“It never should have been necessary, but it was worth it.”
The group went on to say they are looking to the province to legally protect the park “as soon as possible.”
(more…)Because, although it’s clear money isn’t worth much on a sick, burning planet, economy and environment aren’t always so obviously hand in glove… Something, however, could put the Eastern Shore on the map without destroying one of its strongest assets, and with much better rates of success.
And that something is ecotourism.
